Production notes

Winemaking: The fruit for Browne Family was harvested at the peak of Phenolic ripeness and tested on the vine for flavor and structure. Once harvested, all grapes were handpicked into small ½ ton bins and immediately de-stemmed. The winery “crusher,” used to de stem fruit was removed to maintain 70% whole berries during fermentation. This allowed for great extraction of color and increased the maturity of tannins making the wine more approachable. After pressing occurred, primary fermentation was completed in stainless steel. The new wine was then transferred to 59- gallon French Oak casks; selected for their intense Petit Verdot varietal characteristics and to balance the fruit tannins. The Browne Family 2011 Petit Verdot was barrel aged for 24 months.

The talent behind Browne Family Vineyards wines since its first vintage, John Freeman is known for producing award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Chardonnay. Starting in his native Napa, California in the wine industry more than 20 years ago, Freeman is no stranger to bold Cabernet. In Browne he enjoys working with unique sources and aging the wines extensively in French Oak (23-30 months on the reds) mainly for texture. "Browne wines are more viscous, more tannic and just plain bolder than many Washington wines by comparison," he says. "My goal is varietal correctness in each and a great collection of wines that will lay down and cellar for many years to come."
